What is M.e.ch.a.?
We, the members of M.E.Ch.A. de CI, take upon the responsibility to encourage the education of the Chicanx people. We promote political and cultural awareness at CSU Channel Islands and in the surrounding communities, while committing to the struggle for the self-determination and empowerment of La Raza and other communities struggling against discrimination, racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression.
Each word in M.E.Ch.A. symbolizes a great concept in terms of la causa:
MOVIMIENTO means that the
organization is dedicated to the movement to gain self-determination for our people.
ESTUDIANTIL, identifies the
organization as a student group, for we are part of our Raza's future.
At the heart of the name is the use of the identity: CHICANX. In adopting their new identity, the students committed themselves to return to the barrios, colonias, or campos and together, struggle against the forces that oppress our gente.
Lastly, the affirmation that we are
Indigenous people to this land by placing our movement in AZTLAN, the homeland of all people.

FAQ

"What is Chicanx?"
Gender neutral self-identification.
"Is ME.Ch.A. for Chicanx students only?"
No, M.E.Ch.A. is open to everyone, like Chicana/o/x Studies. We hope to share knowledge amongst each other.
"Why do you use Chicanx to identify yourself?"
By identifying as Chicanx, one is rejecting all foreign labels which have been forced upon us. For clarification,
Chicanx is not another word for Mexican. It is a form of self-identification.
"Why M.E.Ch.A. and not other organizations?"
M.E.Ch.A. is a form of familia, helping one another through our journey of education and advocacy; where one can freely express themselves and advocate for social justice.
